Elizabeth H asked:

I can start writing in cursive from right to left, ie.,car would start with the c, not the r, and go left to write the word, either right side up or upside down. As I write, I can change from backwards to upside down or the normal way without hesitation. When I write, I write with the same flow as I would if I were writing like others. It is not necessary to stop and think about how to write the words. I would like to understand why I can do this and if other people are doing the same thing. I have asked several doctors if they knew what causes me to have this ability and no doctor I have asked has been able to explain why I can write this way. I never practiced this skill but one day just started doing it to see if I could. My daughter and several of my grandchildren can also do this without practice. Is it a form of dyslexia? Does it mean my brain is different from other peoples and is there a name for it? Will using it exercise my brain and help prevent alzheimers. Thanks

Since the disease is slow to progress, I was wondering if he was senile while in office? Could this have accounted for his crazy economic “trickle down” policies? Can only a mental illness explain it?

The Truth Behind Alzheimer Disease

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Gilles Coulombe asked:

Because the aging process begins the moment you’re born, some complications can accompany this process.

Among those, is Alzheimer’s. However, there are steps everyone should take to decrease the chances of developing them including Alzheimer’s in order to attain healthy longevity. Alzheimer’s disease is terrible since you loose control over your life, but there are things you can do to prevent its onset. Contrary to common beliefs, Alzheimer’s disease is not an inevitable accompaniment of aging.

RISK FACTORS

There are few interesting theories about the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, but there are no absolute risk factors. However, statistic show that age, family history and genetics can give us some explanations. For example, half of the current residents of nursing homes in US have Alzheimer’s disease.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms are impaired learning, lack of reasoning power, inability to retain new information, trouble performing complex tasks and lack of orientation. Often, Alzheimer’s is confused with other conditions that mimic it, like depression, subdural hematoma, multiple small strokes, brain tumors, hypothyroidism, alcohol abuse, poly-pharmacy, malnutrition and other underlying diseases that can produce behavioral changes mimicking Alzheimer’s.

So it is not an easy task to identify Alzheimer’s with certainty. Usually, specialists proceed by eliminating other possibilities first and the process can be complex. Despite the absence of cure or treatment for Alzheimer’s, every patient should be given a good multivitamin, Ginkgo biloba, tacrine and donepezil. These agents can result in improving memory in older people.

PREVENTION

Let’s concentrate now on how to reduce chances of getting Alzheimer’s.

First, regular mental and physical activity contribute to increase the number of connections needed for normal mental function.

Second, the more schooling you have, the greater are your chances against Alzheimer’s. Like physical exercise, ongoing intellectual challenges stimulate the formation of nerve connections.

Third, stress does probably play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s. It is important then to reduce your level of stress as much as possible.

Fourth, there is and important correlation between consumption of total fat and incidence of Alzheimer’s. You should eat more fish instead because of the protective effect of

Omega-3.

If you don’t eat enough seafood, you can obtain Omega-3 fatty acids in capsule form. Several other foods like artichokes, sardines and lettuce are also “brain builders”.

Fifth, studies have showed that the intake of aspirin and vitamin E may delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Finally, estrogen replacement therapy for women of seventy years of age and older could be beneficial.

Also, stop smoking because it doubles the risk of getting Alzheimer’s The first priority is your health. Take action and get the products you need to reduce your chances of getting Alzheimer’s.

What’s the difference in Dimentia and Alzheimers?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Deenie asked:

They seem very similar to me. Are the symptoms the same? Also..I’ve heard lately that statins can help prevent it. BUT , I took lovastatin one time and it made me forget where I was when I was driving. Then I happened upon a site where others were saying that they had memory lapses with it too.One man was in his front yard and didn’t know where he was….because of lovastatin. I quit it and it stopped happening.
I don’t have either of these…I’ve just wondered about it.
Grace…So Alzheimers can turn into dimentia? I thought dimentia was just old age…things wear out.

Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention: Some Important Tips

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
prevent alzheimers
James S. Pendergraft asked:

Alzheimer is a most familiar form of dementia. Diagnosed generally in people of over the age of  65yrs. Common symptoms of Alzheimer’s is usually mistaken to be age related problem or stress related manifestation. Most common symptom is memory loss where a person finds difficult to remember most recent events. Alzheimer’s disease is confirmed with cognitive and behavioral test, followed by brain scan. As the disease grows to next stage symptoms also include, irritability, aggression, mood swings and confusion, language break down and long term memory loss.

Prevention is better than cure, and some recent findings suggest that individuals can reduce the risk of this disease by adopting a healthy lifestyle and diet system.

Studies reveal that smoking at a latter stage in life that is after 65 years of age manifolds the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease by 79 percent. So in the best interest of your health it is advisable that you refrain from smoking.

Obesity is also considered as a factor which makes a person susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease. Research has shown that an obese person is most likely to get Alzheimer’s disease is three and half times more than a normal built person. Hence losing weight should be a priority for those who are over-weight.

Studies also highlight that consumption of certain nutrient contained foods can circumvent Alzheimer’s disease. Consuming diet rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, olive oil, cereals and fish lowers the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. These nutrients help by giving protection from stress and also by reducing inflammation in brain.

Foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids are also considered to useful to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Found in foods like tuna, salmon and flaxseed they contain healthy fats also known to reduce cholesterol and other heart problems.

Another fundamental characteristic to prevent Alzheimer’s disease is maintaining healthy lifestyle by managing stress in positive manner. Stress is also one of the contributing elements in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Another main component of maintaining healthy and balanced lifestyle is exercise. Regular exercise reduces risk of numerous diseases including Alzheimer’s. Exercise provides you with healthy mind and body and reduces stress.

Adequate sleep also contributes to prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. So it is advisable to have appropriate sleep daily in order to prevent Alzheimer’s and other numerous diseases.

Some specific things like vitamin B12, vitamin D and fish oils when incorporated in your life can also prove to be beneficial in lowering risk of Alzheimer’s disease. These special supplements are believe to preserve memory and improve it as well.

Diabetes and stress too increases your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease. So always make it a point to keep stress and diabetes in control.

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is yet not known, so it is not easy to determine in surety what will prevent Alzheimer’s. Unarguably healthy lifestyle is the best and only way to keep several diseases away. To sum it up adequate sleep, proper stress management and exercise can prove to be useful to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

To Your Health!
