Denise T asked:

Over the years I have heard curry powder, brain exercises, etc. can help in preventing Alzheimers.

More recently I heard they found where in the brain it is caused and so technically they have isolated the chromosome (?) or whatever causes it.

My friend’s mother has Alzheimers and I am seeing signs of it now in him. Can any professionals in the medical field tell me if there is anything that can be done in the early stages to help my friend? I hate just sitting by and “watching it happen.”

What if you have a parent who is demented and you want to place them in a nursing home? How much is it? How much does medicare pay for? I am wondering, and they have a house but can’t live in it any more because they are a danger to themselves so they live with me. Do you have to sell everything including their house to qualify for payment? Anyone with experience? Thanks

Preventing Alzheimer’s: How to Keep Your Brain Healthy

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

James S. Pendergraft asked:

Alzheimer’s is a deadly disease that is claiming an increasing number of people each year. As you know, however, research in this field has still not managed to isolate the reason behind this dreaded and debilitating disease. To help bring the increasing numbers down, however, they’ve now expanded their field of research to include prevention methods.

Before we get to the tips that you should follow to keep your brain healthy, let’s take a quick look at some of the causes that are attributed to Alzheimer’s: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, poor quality sleep, severe stress, alcohol consumption, smoking, drug abuse, head injuries, liver disease, lung disease and exposure of the brain to toxic substances.

Taking care of the above mentioned conditions will automatically benefit the brain. If you do suffer from one or more of these conditions then you need to start addressing the issues with a proper medically approved and recommended plan. If you don’t already have any of these conditions, then your focus must be on preventing their occurrence.

Here are a few additional tips that will help prevent Alzheimer ’s disease:

Diet: Eating foods that are healthy for the heart is a good way to benefit the brain as well. Fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be good for the heart. They include mackerel, salmon, sardines, herring and albacore tuna. They can also be got from spinach and flax seed oil. However, it must be mentioned that some fish have higher contents of methylmercury which is then transferred to humans and can be dangerous to pregnant or nursing women, kids below the age of six and those with malfunctioning kidneys.

Fish low in methylmercury include farmed catfish, salmon from the Pacific, farmed trout and blue crab from the mid-Atlantic. Berries that are blue and purple in color are good for the brain as well as they contain anti-oxidants and anthocyanins. Eating curries that generally contain turmeric is also advised as it contains curcumin, a substance that inhibits free radicals which are responsible for degeneration. Drinking a moderate amount of red wine on a daily basis as well as vegetable and fruit juices which are rich in antioxidants are helpful in preventing Alzheimer’s.

Physical Exercise: Exercising on a regular basis is definitely beneficial to the brain which benefits from the increased flow of blood that in turn provides brain cells with ample nutrition. Engaging in at least 30 minutes of exercise five times a week is essential and can be in any form of your liking from walking to gardening. Add two to three sessions of resistance training to this regime as it not only makes you fitter and muscular but also encourages cognitive health. Stretching to improve balance also helps as it reduces the risk of injuries. Keeping yourself fit allows you to enjoy a healthy and active life which benefits your brain.

Mental Exercise: Don’t ever stop learning. Every time you do something different you generate fresh brain cells regardless of your advancing age.

Take classes to learn a new skill, play games that are mentally stimulating (such as crossword, Sudoku puzzles, chess), read, and find new ways of doing the same chores you perform on a daily basis, spend time enjoying a hobby. All of this keeps your brain active and alert keeping dementia at arms length.

An Important and Easy Way to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Hope Pope asked:

Copyright (c) 2009 Hope Pope

There has been a lot of talk over the past few years about omega 3 but what a lot of people don’t know is how important it really is.

DHA (fish oil) found in Omega 3 has been shown to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

A study reported in the December 26, 2007 issue of “The Journal of Neuroscience”, performed at University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA), looked at the relationship between DHA and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study showed that DHA may increase the levels of a protein (LR11) in ones body which has been shown to break up the build-up of plaque that is responsible for causing Alzheimer’s disease.

Cells from mice, rats, and humans were used by researchers to show that the DHA-induced production of the protein LR11 may help destroy the plaques that are responsible for Alzheimer’s disease.

According to this study, the higher the level of LR11 in ones blood, the less likely one will develop Alzheimer’s. And vice versa, the lower the levels of LR11 in ones blood, the higher the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Another study done to by Ernst Schaefer, M.D., director of the Lipid Metabolism Laboratory of the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. They looked to see if Omega 3 could help prevent dementia The results were published in the November 2006, “Archives of Neurology”.

The study involved 899 senior adults. They checked the adults level of DHA in their blood at the onset of the study and then at the end of the study (9.1 years later).

What they found was that there was definitely a relationship between DHA levels in the blood and Alzheimer’s Disease. Those with higher levels of DHA in their blood in the beginning developed a lot less cases (47% less risk) of Alzheimers than those with lower levels of DHA in their system.

Eating fish would be the best way to get DHA into the bloodstream, however, due to the dangerously high levels of mercury in fish now (from fish in the ocean and farm raised fish), the negative affects of the mercury can far outweigh the benefits of fish.

Another option is to take DHA supplements… which would be the easiest way to get DHA into the bloodstream.

When shopping for DHA, supplements labeled “DHA”, “fish oil” or “cod oil” would all be sufficient; they are all safe ways to get DHA into the bloodstream.

Kyle J. Norton asked:

I. What is dementia ?

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age. Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people’s every life and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

II. Types of dementia

1. Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Over 1 million people in US alone are currently afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease because of degeneration of hippocampus and cerebral cortex of the brain where memory, language and cognition are located. With this mental disorder, brain cells gradually die and generate fewer and fewer chemical signals day by day resulting in diminished of functions. Overtime memory thinking as well as behavior deteriorates. Today, there is no know cure.

2. Absence of acetylcholine

If the nerves located in front of the brain perish, causing diminished quality of acetylcholine resulting in language difficulty, memory loss, concentration problem and reduced moblile skills because of lacking reaction in muscular activity and refection.

3. Dementia due to long-term alcohol abuse.

Dementia is common in patients with alcoholism. Most classic is the Korsakoff’s dementia resulting in extremely poor short term memory and often associated with the memory losses are confabulations.

4. Multi-infarct dementia

Also known asvascular dementia , is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease in older adults. It is caused by different mechanisms all resulting in vascular lesions in the brain.

5. Dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition. It is a cognitive deficits due to the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops that facilitate cognition and that parallel the motor loop.

6. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)

People who have eaten contaminated beef many years may be infected without even knowing it. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a quickly progressing and fatal disease that consists of dementia, muscle twitching and spasm.

7. Subdural hematoma

It is the accumulation of blood beneath the outer covering of the brain that result from the rupture of blood vessel. Subdural hemorrhages may cause an increase in tracranial pressure, which can cause compression of and damage to delicate brain tissue. Acute subdural hematoma has a high mortality rate.

There are many types of dementia such as metabolic disorders, dementia due to long-term substance abuse, hypothyroidism, and hyperethyroidism.

III. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

1. Increasing forgetfulness

2. Communication difficulty

3. Depression

4. Anxiety

5. Mood and personal change

6. Difficulty making decision

7. repeat question

8. memory loss

9. Poor judgment

IV. Prevent and Treatment

A. With foods

1. Curry

Curry is the Indian favor which is daily eaten and contains curcumin that helps to trigger the production of enzymes protecting against any oxidative disease. It also is filled with phenols, the natural inflammation fighter.

2. Garlic

Garlic is one of nature’s superfood that contains allicin that help to strengthen the immune system fighting against any harmful toxins and micro organism naturally. It also contains iron that help in producing of red blood cells and improving circulation of blood to brain cells.

3. Dark green leaf juice

Dark green leaf juice contains hundreds of phytochemicals that help to detoxify our body from free radical build-up, removing heavy metals from our brain and have an anti-virus, anti-bacteria, immune boosting resulting in anti-inflammation. It also helps to strengthen the liver, the vital organ for our body’s detoxification. Dark green leaf juice is best for detoxification against any plague and tangle in our body.

4. Cold water fish

Cold water fish contains high amounts of fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 that help to lower the levels of bad cholesterol and triglyceride resulting in healthy heart and improved blood circulation.

5. Cinnamon powder

One the most powerful natural superfood. Contains essential oil that helps to strengthen immune system caused by virus and bacteria and infection caused by wound. Study shows that cinnamon also will help to regulate levels of glucose in the bloodstream which aids blood circulation.

6. Tomato

Tomato contains high amounts of beta carotene, the powerful antioxidant that helps to remove toxins from our body and fight against free radical building up in our brain. Beta carotene in tomato is tough to digest. Be sure intake with vitamin C to increase the absorption.

7. Grape juice

Grape juice contains high amounts of iron that helps the production of red blood cells resulting in increase of oxygen levels in the blood stream for brain cells.

8. Broccoli

Broccoli contains high amounts of vitamin C and fiber that helps to strengthen the immune system and reduce cholesterol building up in the arteries, increasing the blood circulation to brain vessels.

In fact, any foods that contain high amounts of antioxidants resulting in winning the battle of free radical build up in our body including our brain will help to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease.

B. With vitamins and Minerals

1.Vitamin complex

Vitamin complex is supportive for people with Alzheimer’s disease, a disorder that is also associated with low levels of pyridoxine and cobalamin. Vitamins b5, B6, B12 is vital for strengthening the immune system fighting against free radical building up in certain brain areas.

2. Iron

The right amount of iron will help the production of red blood cells and improve circulation of blood as well as oxygen levels in the blood stream, that is vital for brain cells need for better function.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin. It helps to strengthen our immune system in fighting of the early forming of free radicals and DNA mutation. Our body can not produce vitamin C, Fruits and vegetables contain high vitamin C such as kiwi, broccoli, lemon, and apple.

4. Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps to strengthen the immune system and restore the balance of hormone.

5. Zinc

Zinc not only helps prostate gland increase production of fluid and semen, but also help to promote the production of testosterone by stopping the production of procalin and reduce the binding of sex hormone binding globulin. Increasing the testosterone levels in men will help in preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.

6. Magnesium

Magnesium and potassium helps to strengthen and prevent calcium forming the arterial wall. Right amounts of magnesium, potassium and calcium not only help in increasing of blood circulation but also lower high blood pressure. Calcium deficiency may cause the loss of memory and senility.

C. With Herbs

1.Ginko biloba

Ginko biloba enhances the circulation to the central nerves system and has a tendency to stabilize abnormal nerve communication in the brain. It also is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the brain cells from free radical damage.

2. Korean ginseng

Korean ginseng contains ginsenosides which is an anti-stress remedy. It also helps to increase protein synthesis and improves the performance of neurotransmitters in the brain resulting in curbing the onset of psychological deterioration and aiding mental condition.

3. Huperzine A

Huperzia, as it is now called, contains a wide variety of alkaloids, including lycodoline, lycoclavine, and serratinine that help to increase the acetylcholine activity in the brain resulting in improved memory and behavior problems.

4. Kut

The mixture of herbal formula in Japan, also help in increasing the activity of acetycholine in the cortex and hippocampus section of the brain and stimulating the growth of nerve cells.

5. Garlic Extract

Garlic extract helps to improve the immune system and blood circulation in our body as well as preventing the forming of free radicals.

6. Pumpkin seed

Pumpkin seed contains high amounts of zinc and iron. Zinc is a vital mineral for a healthy prostate gland which helps to trigger the production of free testosterone. Iron helps the reproduction of red blood cells and increases the oxygen levels in blood stream that is essential for brain cells.

7. Chlorella

Chlorella contains the antioxidant chlorophyll that helps to protect against the forming of free radicals and improve circulation of blood in our body. Study shows that chlorella also helps to protect brain cells caused by high level of stress hormones. The nucleic acid in chlorella also helps to improve memory.

D. With conventional approach

1. Inflammation

Strengthening immune system will help to fight off foreign substances, molecules as well as forming of free radicals that help to decrease or prevent any degree of inflammation in joints, skin, and the brain resulting in skin wrinkle, arthritis and memory problems. Cinnamon powder contain high amounts of antioxidant beta carotene that can help to strengthen your immune system and fight against any inflammation.

2. Mini-Stroke

Mini stoke may not have any impact in brain cells but hundreds or thousands of mini strokes may cause the blockage of brain vessels resulting in accumulation of plagues and tangles. Therefore taking life style changes to protect overall health may help to to prevent or delay any other memory loss and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Garlic contains high amounts of iron that help to reproduce blood cells as well improve oxygen levels resulting in better circulation of blood to brain cells.

3. Control high blood pressure

High blood pressure causes the heart to work harder to provide oxygen to brain cells resulting in plague building up in the arterial wall and hardening of arteries. Chlorella contains chlorophyll that help not only to remove plague from the arterial wall but also heavy metals accumulated in our brain.

4. Control levels of cholesterol

Cholesterol causes the clogging up of brain vessels. Fish contains high amounts of fatty acid Omega 3 and 6 that helps to inhibit blood clotting causing a serious blockage in the vessels of the brain.

5. Eating more vegetable and fruits

Vegetable and fruits contain antioxidant vitamins and other photochemicals that can help to protect brain cells from damage from free radicals and stop the progressing of brain cells dying off due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Others such as reducing intake of alcohol, stop smoking, get regular exercise and staying mentally active also help as well.

E. With supplements

1. Melatonin

As aging, the production of melatonin in the pineal gland diminishes. The intake of melatonin supplement may exert a powerful antioxidant activity that easily helps to prevent the formation of cell radicals in our body including the brain.

2. Carnosine

Carnosine helps to block the formation of glycosylation, caused by sugar aldehydes reacting with the amino acid on the protein molecule. It also helps to remove toxic chemicals such as copper and zinc from the brain.

3. DHEA

DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland that helps to regulate the balance of our body hormones. Deficiency of DHEA causes hormone imbalance in men as well as women. Study show that intake of DHEA is necessary for aging men for improving mental ability and alleviating stress.

4. Coenezyme Q 10

Coenezyme Q 10 helps to increase the circulation and oxygen levels of the blood stream. As we know that lack of oxygen in the blood can exacerbate cognitive deterioration.

5. Lecithin

Choline and inositol in the lecithin helps to increase production of acetylcholine in our body helping the communication and signal-transmission between brain cells. An increase in lecithin will prompt brain cells to produce more acetylcholine, thus improving memory.

6. Taurine

Besides helping to protect the formation of free radicals in brain cells and enhance nervous cell function, taurine is essential in protecting the supply of magnesium and calcium in the brain.

I hope this information will help. If you want to more information of the above subject, you can follow my series of articles and visit my home page at:

Why isn’t there a working Vaccine for Lyme’s Disease yet?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Heather B asked:

I know there was one that was being worked on, which is why the CDC had to write down very rigid (and only moderately accurate) guidelines for their Lyme diagnostic procedures, in order to quantify an illusive illness. It mimics Chronic Fatigue syndrome, FMS, even Alzheimers and Parkinson’s– and yet, when the original vaccine was found to _give_ people Lyme’s instead of prevent it (oops, scary!), it was shelved and nothing more came of that. Yes, I have a vested interest- I have Lyme’s disease, my children have it (passed through my womb when I was pregnant and undiagnosed). My continuing research scares me- Lyme’s is often underestimated and standard tests can be inaccurate or, worse, falsely negative, leaving undiagnosed people in pain and untreated for years or even decades. I was sick for sixteen years before I got a positive western blot, not uncommon for folks who who have chronic Lyme. (BTW, I got sick in the 80’s in SC, not a “Lyme State”)
You’re right, Spirocete’s ARE forms of bacteria, and one of the ways Lyme hides itself in the body by changing its form.

And There _was_ a vaccine, but it was found to cause symptoms. but why isn’t there work being done on an EFFECTIVE solution? Politics?

Alright, you guys don’t know what you are talking about.

Read some of the articles before you comment.

This is just a news site. They print articles from both sides of the argument as long as they are on topic.

On top of that, they are citing research published in peer reviewed medical journals like Lancet, etc.

Time to know what you are talking about before dismissing this as simply biased.

Lame…
And the alzheimers thing was reported on NBC…

yup, very biased..

Top 7 Tips to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
prevent alzheimers
Raymond Lee asked:

Despite the absence of a cure for Alzheimer’s, there are some proven ways to help your brain stay young and lessen your chances of developing this disease.

1. Ongoing mental and physical exercise

Exercise keeps the brain healthy. Either use it or lose it. Regular physical activity increases the blood flow to the brain and provides the nutrients necessary to render its tissues resistant to Alzheimer’s. Exercise also increases the number of connections among the millions of brain cells needed for normal mental function. Get into the habit of walking for thirty or sixty minutes a day as briskly as possible. Stair climbing is particularly effective, so take the steps when going up or down one or two flights and leave the elevators and escalators to the kids.

2. Education

Several population studies have shown that the more schooling you have, the greater are your chances against Alzheimer’s. That may be because the educated are more likely to eat more nutritiously and receive better medical care throughout their lives. However, like physical exercise, ongoing intellectual challenges stimulate the formation of nerve connections. Even if you are destined to develop Alzheimer’s, the more neutrons you develop when you are young, the more you can afford to lose before symptoms set in.

Many retired seniors sign up for classes in accounting, law, art, music, economics, or whatever else interests them to stay mentally active, and not necessarily to start a second career. The longer you continue your education at any age, or keep your mind busy in some other way, the more likely your neurons are to connect with each other later on.

3. Reaction to stress

Stress is blamed for almost everything that goes wrong in life. Although stress is a convenient scapegoat, it probably does play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s. The body reacts to stress by producing extra amounts of cortisol, a hormone that shrinks the hippocampus, the area in the brain that controls the memory and interferes with its normal function. The calmer and more self confident you are in a crisis, whether it is short-lived or prolonged, the less cortisol is produced.

4. Diet

Eat as little animal fat as possible to reduce your vulnerability to Alzheimer’s. The incidence of Alzheimer’s in different countries correlates with the consumption of total fat. Fro example, in the United States, 5 percent of all persons over the age of sixty-five have the disease, while in China and Nigeria, where the fat intake is much lower, the incidence is only 1 percent. Japanese who move to America and double the amount of fat in their diet have twice the incidence of Alzheimer’s than do those who do not emigrate and presumably maintain their old eating habits.

5. Nicotine

Nicotine is a prime example of how new research data can supersede and negate previously acquired information. We used to believe that smokers were less likely than non-smokers to develop Alzheimer’s. But the anti-tobacco community is now breathing easier because more recent studies indicate that smoking doubles the risk of getting Alzheimer’s.

6. Vitamin E

Hardly a day does by without some favorable report about vitamin E. I can’t think of any downside of this vitamin, with the possible exception of its raising blood pressure and causing some extra beats in some people. Vitamin E increases fertility in rats; it’s good for the heart; and many doctors prescribe it for the treatment of vascular disease, particularly for narrowing the arteries in the legs. Now comes word that vitamin E may also delay the onset of Alzheimer’s, presumably by virtue of its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants, of which there are many, are said to neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals, the byproducts of bodily process that involve oxygen. These radicals carry an extra electron that can damage the protein in the brain and other organs and accelerate the aging process. The body’s own antioxidant normally neutralizes these free radicals, but this defense can be enhanced by supplemental vitamin E.

7. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Millions of us use these drugs for relief of everything from headache to arthritis. In recent years, researchers noted a 50 percent lower incidence of Alzhemier’s in persons with rheumatoid arthritis who had been using these drugs for any length of time. Alzheimer patients who take aspirin or other NSAIDs have better verbal and mental functioning scores too, and the rate of their overall deterioration is measurably slower.
