Improve Memory Loss — How to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

Susan Nickerson asked:

Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic, degenerative and fatal neurological disease that destroys the memory and mental capacity of sufferers. Although medication can slow its progress, there is no cure. At a certain point in the disease, there is no way to improve memory loss.

Fortunately, Alzheimer’s is not an inevitable result of aging. The good news is —there are practical ways to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD, President of Tucson’s non-profit Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation or ARPF, believes prevention is actually the best treatment.

“We have to realize that the era of the magic bullet — drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease — is over,” asserts Dr. Khalsa. “We need to take an integrative approach, like they do for heart disease.”

The ARFP works tirelessly to educate the public and the medical profession about ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Khalsa has created a holistic memory loss prevention program that combines the best of Eastern and Western medicine to improve the memory loss that can progress to full Alzheimer’s.

Here are Dr. Khalsa’s Four Pillars of Prevention:

Pillar 1 — Diet and Vitamins. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits reduces free radicals that damage brain cells. Dr. Khalsa recommends avoiding red meats, as they induce swelling that releases free radicals. He also recommends ‘superfoods’ for the brain, such as blueberries and spinach.

Pillar 2 — Stress Management. When the brain is under chronic stress, stress hormones like cortisol remain constantly high. The chance for memory loss grows, because cortisol blocks blood flow to the memory regions.

Pillar 3 — Physical and Mental Exercise. Performing physical exercise 20 minutes a day, three days a week lowers your Alzheimer’s risk by 50%. Mental exercise in the same amount can reduce Alzheimer’s risk by 70%.

Pillar 4 — Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Khalsa believes that Western pharmaceuticals such as Aricept, Exelon, Namenda and Razadyne may play a necessary role in a holistic prevention program and improving memory loss.

The ARFP promotes these Four Pillars of Prevention — proper nutrition, stress management, mental and physical exercise, and medication to improve memory loss — as a major breakthrough in how to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Interested in how Marijuana may fight dementia and possibly Alzheimers?
The below article was published in the Columbus Dispatch and cites an Ohio State University Study which looks at the effects of marijuana on the brains of rats with dementia.

http://cannabisnews.com/news/22/thread22…

Ohio — Give an old, confused rat some pot and it starts remembering things. An Ohio State University study shows that synthetic marijuana boosted memory and reduced brain inflammation in rats with brains altered to mimic the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researcher Gary Wenk, a study co-author and Ohio State professor, shared his work at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Atlanta this week.

The findings support the theory that anti-inflammatories might help fight the devastating disease and add to evidence that compounds in pot might be helpful in treating Alzheimer’s, Wenk said.

Alzheimers?

gahhh asked:

My nanny has alzheimers; she was diagnosed in late 200, it currently being 2008. Up until about a week or so ago, she would eat (if the food was cut up), speak in full sentences and be contenent. Starting on about monday, my nana has not spoken one full sentence (she says NO to EVERYTHING i.e. do you want to go to bed? no. do you want to stay up? no. what do you want to do? no. nany what’s wrong? shut up!) she used to be a nasty woman; alzheimers had changed her but she’s becoming that nasty woman again. instead of getting ‘i love you’s, i’m getting no’s and shut ups… she is becoming more and more incontinent each day. it started with just one poise pad a week, then turned into two, then one a day, now it’s every time we take her to the bathroom, she’s gone in her pants. when we wake up in the morning, there’s a 50/50 chance she’s wet her bed. lately, i dont know what’s happening, this makes me very upset.
to answer your questions from previous questions, i am 14, not the primary cgvr
cgvr is caregiver. i also need to know how to talk to my mum about this; she is very stressed lately. she is hesitant to go away but we ALL need a vacation. did i already say i was 14? sorry… i forgot
Thanks Lori F
We do put depends on her nightly
dont get me wrong i absolutely love my nana to death… my mom is her power of attorney(i think)
we took my nanna to the hospital on monday to see if she had had a mini stroke, but no, thank god. today she is perfectly fine… this morning(with the help of my mum) she walked into my room and woke me up with a kiss on the cheek… she was all cheery! i don’t know what happened but… thanks for all the help anyways!!!!!!!!!!!!<33:-)))

Alzheimer’s Disease Information – 3 Tips to Prevent Memory Loss and Dementia

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
prevent alzheimers
Susan Nickerson asked:

Here’s some astonishing Alzheimer’s disease information: nearly 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. And that number is expected to jump to as many as 16 million as baby boomers join the ranks of our senior citizens.

You needn’t be one of those millions afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Courtesy of the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation, you can take advantage now of these 3 tips to prevent memory loss and dementia and add years of good health and mental acuity to your life.

Tip #1: Adopt a mind-healthy diet. An excellent diet that prevents Alzheimer’s disease is one that includes 20% “right” fats (rich in omega-3s from such sources as fish, olive oil and flax seed oil); 50% lean protein (from fish, chicken, turkey and soy products); and 30% complex carbohydrates (from fresh vegetables and fruits, legumes and whole grains).

Foods to avoid are ones that are high in trans-fat and saturated fat. Eaten in high quantities, these foods produce free radicals. Free radicals are a normal by-product of metabolism, but in high concentrations, they can cause inflammation and damage your cells, including brain cells. Antioxidant supplements like Vitamins C, E and B12 help your body eliminate these free radicals and improve your brain health as well. Other supplements that improve brain health and prevent memory loss are gingko biloba and Coenzyme Q-10.

Tip #2: Keep both your body and your brain active. Physical exercise is important for maintaining both a healthy body and a healthy mind. Physical exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of memory loss by as much as 50%. Physical activities can be as simple as walking, biking or dancing — or they can include activities of a more aerobic nature, such as jogging, strength training or swimming.

Don’t forget your brain when it comes to exercising. A good mental exercise is one that challenges the brain by focusing your attention, involving more than one of the five senses and breaks up your normal routine in an unexpected way. So take a break and read a book, work a crossword puzzle, play a board game, meditate or do a Sudoku puzzle. The time you spend exercising your brain will benefit your mental health, just as physical action will benefit your body’s health.

Tip #3: Balance your daily routine with some form of stress management. Stress can cause high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and is a factor in Alzheimer’s disease. It can also increase the production of cortisol, a stress chemical that increases your heart rate and damages brain cells in the memory center of your brain. It also prevents glucose from entering brain cells and inhibits your neurotransmitter function. The result is damage, or even death, of vital healthy brain cells. This leads to short-term memory loss.

Your brain is an amazing, complex part of your body, and its care and feeding is a vital part of your daily routine. Investing your time now on this important Alzheimer’s disease information will pay off in the future. And these 3 tips to prevent memory loss and dementia will help you reduce the risk of developing memory loss in the years to come.

Thank you for reading this. My grandfather is dying (alzheimers, non-tremor parkinsons) and has medical directive preventing IVs, etc. I am not a doctor, and barely know the terminology. Anyway, his “BUN” level was 32 one week ago, and is now 41. Can someone with knowledge in this area give me their best estimate as to how long he has left. I would appreciate it. I know it’s not long, but I don’t know if it is a matter of hours, days or weeks. Thank you.
