Greencastle PS asked:

It seems like often when I take my kids to church they come home with one or two head lice. ( I comb them when we get home to check becuase I am paranoid about it after going through it once.) If I miss something their grandma gets them and she has alzheimers, lives with us, and how do I check her. (home health care nurses come in a few times a week for to help her bathe) Someone told me something about coal tar shampoo will repel them but I’m not sure. Any guesses?

Kyle J. Norton asked:

As we mentioned in previous articles, Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named after German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. In this article, we will discuss how you can prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease.Since Alzheimer’s disease is caused by the formation of plaques and tangles that destroy brain cells. Strengthening immune system fights against inflammation, heart disease, stroke, reduce high blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and healthy diet will help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.1. InflammationStrengthening immune system will help to fight off foreign substances, molecules as well as forming of free radicals that help to decrease or prevent any degree of inflammation in joints, skin, and the brain resulting in skin wrinkle, arthritis and memory problems. Cinnamon powder contain high amounts of antioxidant beta carotene that can help to strengthen your immune system and fight against any inflammation.2. Mini-StrokeMini stoke may not have any impact in brain cells but hundreds or thousands of mini strokes may cause the blockage of brain vessels resulting in accumulation of plagues and tangles. Therefore taking life style changes to protect overall health may help to to prevent or delay any other memory loss and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Garlic contains high amounts of iron that help to reproduce blood cells as well improve oxygen levels resulting in better circulation of blood to brain cells.3. Control high blood pressureHigh blood pressure causes the heart to work harder to provide oxygen to brain cells resulting in plague building up in the arterial wall and hardening of arteries. Chlorella contains chlorophyll that help not only to remove plague from the arterial wall but also heavy metals accumulated in our brain.4. Control levels of cholesterolCholesterol causes the clogging up of brain vessels. Fish contains high amounts of fatty acid Omega 3 and 6 that helps to inhibit blood clotting causing a serious blockage in the vessels of the brain.5. Eating more vegetable and fruitsVegetable and fruits contain antioxidant vitamins and other photochemicals that can help to protect brain cells from damage from free radicals and stop the progressing of brain cells dying off due to Alzheimer’s disease.Others such as reducing intake of alcohol, stop smoking, get regular exercise and staying mentally active also help as well.I hope this information will help. 5 Steps To Staying Mentally Sharp And Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Frank Mangano asked:

If you want to stay sharp and in control of your life well into your golden years, there are proactive methods to achieving the mental alertness you need. More and more research is pointing to the fact that physical activity and lifestyle choices have more to do with preventing Alzheimer s disease (AD) and other forms of dementia - once thought to be a normal part of aging - than pure genetics. So if you had a parent, grandparent or sibling with AD it doesn’t mean you have to follow the same path.

Statistics gathered from extensive research do point toward a higher risk of developing AD if you had a close relative with AD - as much as 50%, but that has less to do with genes and more to do with following their lifestyle patterns. If for example, your parents were smokers who rarely exercised, you may have developed some of the same destructive habits.

What can you do to break the cycle and prevent AD? Take action and take control today. Even if you are in your 60s or 70s you can reverse some of the damage done to your brain through poor diet, inactivity, or damaging lifestyle choices. Scientists have discovered very recently that the brain has the ability to repair cells and neurotransmitters and improve cognitive function and memory.

It’s Not Too Late to Make A Difference: Start the 5 Steps Today

1. Eat Right. It seems so simple, yet too many people just don’t get enough of the mind preserving antioxidants found in fresh fruits and vegetables. A well-balanced diet, free of diary products and using low fat sources of protein will protect both heart and mind.

2. Supplement where necessary. Many diets lack the nutrients proven to promote brain health. These include sources of essential fatty acids found in fish and specific herbs and minerals that can enhance cognitive function.

3. Exercise. Originally it was thought that exercise increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain cells. This is still true, but a report prepared for the National Institutes of Health states that exercise can also stimulate the production growth factors, which are molecules produced by the body to repair and maintain nerves.

4. Lower Your Cholesterol. Many people with early dementia or AD symptoms may have actually experienced small strokes that damaged the brain’s neurotransmitters. By keeping cholesterol levels in check, the arteries are free and clear of plaque that can cause stroke.

5. Do your Mental Exercises. Keeping up with current events, working puzzles each day, learning and memorizing new information all work to keeping a mind strong and alert. It is normal for people to sometimes forget a name or date, but the more practice recalling such information the greater the brain’s ability to do this throughout old age. In the case of mental challenges, the more you do the more you can push back the clock on cognitive decline.

Five easy steps, when you think about it, can do much to make aging an event to celebrate instead of dread. With age there comes experience and wisdom, and we should all do whatever is within our power to be able to pass that on to the next generation.

why is marijuana not legal when alcohol and ciggarettes are?

mattoon_pac asked:

a doctor Donald Taskin just finished a 30 year study that proves marijuana does not lead to cancer in the lungs, head, or neck.
Also people with alzheimer have an enzyme in the brain called acetylcholine or AChE. which does two things: 1. accelerates formation of abnormal protein clumps in the brain. 2. breaks down the brain chemical linked to memory.
the main compound of marijuana called thc inhibits this enzyme. THC could completely prevent this, donepezil and tacrine, the two most prescribed medication for alzheimers only reduce clumping by 7 to 22 percent.

Top 4 Substances for Alzheimer’s Prevention and Treatment

Monday, August 24th, 2009
prevent alzheimers
Raymond Lee asked:

Of the many problems that may inflict us as we age, losing our memory and mental function is perhaps the most frightening. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition in which the neurons in the brain degenerate. The brain literally shrinks. As the cells fall apart, the memories they stored are lost. The ability to control many body functions, including the bladder and bowels, disappears. Seen under a microscope, the neurons of a brain affected by Alzheimer’s reveal telltale tangles and scars. The cause of Alzheimer’s disease may involve a chronic deficiency of antioxidants and vitamins such as B12 and folic acid. Head injury may be a factor as well. Many experts also suspect aluminium could be a culprit, because the nerve tangles of Alzheimer’s victims contain excessive levels of this toxic metal. There is no cure, but it may be possible to take natural steps to prevent Alzheimer’s from occurring or at least to slow down its progression. Studies have found that many elderly people have deficiencies of vitamins and minerals. Whether these deficiencies cause Alzheimer’s is not known, but here are some substances you can consider that show considerable promise.

1. Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is the major phospholipid in the brain, where it plays a major role in determining the integrity and fluidity of cell membranes. Normally the brain can manufacture sufficient levels of phosphatidylserine, but if there is a deficiency of methyl donors such as SAM-e, folic acid, and vitamin B12 or essential fatty acids, the brain may not be able to make sufficient phosphatidylserine. Phosphatidylserine has shown very good results in the treatment of depression and/or impaired mental function in the elderly. The typical dosage is 100 mg three times daily.

2. L-acetylcarnitine

Carnitine is a vitamin- like compound that helps your cells make energy. Carnitine attached to an acetyl molecule becomes L-acetylcarnitine, which looks and acts a lot like acetylcholine. Researchers have found that L-acetylcarnitine delays the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and helps elderly patients who have depression or impaired memory. The typical dosage is 500 mg three times daily.

3. Ginkgo Biloba Extract

This ancient herb is showing great benefit in the treatment of senility, including Alzheimer’s. It increases the functional capacity of the brain by improving blood flow. It also appears to enhance neurotransmitter activity by normalizing acetylcholine receptors in the hippocampus, the brain area most affected by the disease. Ginkgo is not a cure, but it may slow or delay mental deterioration during the early stages, allowing the patient to live a normal life for as long as possible. Improvement may take three to six months to appear.

4. Huperzine

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s appear to result from reduced levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. In the brain, acetylcholine is broken down by an enzyme. A compound from club moss known as huperzine A appears to slow down the action of the enzyme and thus may help preserve the supply of acetylcholine and improve memory in Alzheimer’s disease without causing side effects. Preliminary studies in China are extremely impressive. The typical dosage is 200 mg twice daily.

Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease – 5 Simple Tips

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
prevent alzheimers
Susan Nickerson asked:

Is Alzheimer’s genetic? Or is it an unfortunate fact of aging? Are there steps we can take right now to start preventing Alzheimer’s disease from developing as we get older?

Currently, there is no tried and true proven method for preventing Alzheimer’s. But doctors have been making major breakthroughs with this debilitating disease for many years now. It has become clear that there are several important steps you can take right now to greatly reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease as you age.

Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. ,President and Medical Director of the non-profit Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, has been studying methods for preventing Alzheimer’s even before creating the ARPF in 1993. In 2003, the United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Richard Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., voiced his strong support for Dr. Khalsa’s methods.

The following tips come from Dr. Dharma’s 4 Pillars of Prevention, which are only a small part of the information you can find on the ARPF website. By incorporating these simple lifestyle practices into your life today, you can go a long way towards preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

1. Eat a diet rich in the special nutrients that are good for your brain.

Your brain, like every other organ in your body, needs the proper fuel to function at its highest level. A good Alzheimer’s prevention diet should give you 20% “good fats” (extra virgin olive oil, avocado, etc.), 40% lean protein (particularly fish), and 40% complex carbohydrates and vegetables. Foods rich in antioxidant compounds are also essential for maintaining your healthy brain.

2. Avoid a diet high in trans-fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol.

These fats cause an increase in free radical production in your body. And large quantities of free radicals in the body have been found to kill brain cells.

3. Reduce the stress level in your daily life.

Recent research has found a strong link between high stress levels and the development of Alzheimer’s disease in the future. High levels of stress can cause your body to produce large quantities of the proteins beta-amyloid and tau, which are responsible for the build-up of tangles and plaques typically found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

Dr. Dharma recommends you incorporate one or more of the following stress management techniques: meditation, yoga, hypnosis, relaxation exercises, prayer, and deep breathing.

4. Take part in regular physical exercise.

Researchers have found a link between cardiovascular health and brain health. This makes perfect sense, since your heart is responsible for pumping blood to your brain.

Brisk walking, hiking, jogging, dance classes, swimming, and participation in sports will provide you with adequate exercise to keep your brain fit. Of course, it’s important to engage in your activity of choice several times a week.

5. Don’t forget to exercise your mind, too!

Mental exercise has been found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 70%. The brain is like any other muscle in your body. If you don’t use it, it will start to atrophy.

It is important to engage in a variety of mental exercises. Your mind will stay sharper when activities are varied and new.

Some good brain exercises include learning something new (musical instrument, foreign language, for example), memory games, reading (especially challenging material), writing, and crossword puzzles.

It’s never too soon to start preventing Alzheimer’s. By using these tips to make your daily lifestyle practices healthier, you can go a long way towards staying mentally sharp as you get older.
