Ayurveda and Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

Alzheimers
Dev Sri asked:

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative brain disease. Gradual memory loss, poor cognitive skills, dementia and personality problems are the main symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Though there is not a complete cure for Alzheimer’s, Ayurveda has the knowledge to treat an Alzheimer’s patient.

Ayurvedic treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is very much on its developmental stage. Ayurveda scientists in India, US and Germany are on the lookout of an effective cure for Alzheimer’s disease using Ayurvedic herbs like Brahmi.

According to Ayurveda, all the diseases are caused due to imbalances in body. Tridosha concept is the basis of Ayurvedic knowledge. The food, the daily actions, the thought etc should be in tune with tridoshas.

Alzheimer’s disease is due to imbalance of vata, which is common in old age. According to Ayurvedic principles, vata in the tissues of nervous system, especially brain gets imbalanced. This directly leads to problems like lower levels of co-ordination, clear thinking, lack of inhibitions and retarded words and actions.

Mano vaha srotas or the mind-channel that carries thoughts is affected due to vitiation of vata. This is the reason for delusions and mental disturbances.

Once the causes are identified it is easy to prescribe the cures. In case of Alzheimer’s, Ayurveda too offers some assistance in helping a person live with Alzheimer’s.

According to Ayurveda, the tensions and stress a person experience during his or her life cause disturbances to vata, the accumulation of which causes severe nervous problems. Pressure at work, pressure experienced while changing places, constant separation from close family members, etc all add up to the mental conditions.

In India too the large family system of living is fast depleting. People move into a small family. In the not-so older times, say before 1980s, Indian families were large with a lot of family members. There is support for the family members all the time from other members. This system has constant reinforcing power on individual members and they enjoy healthy minds.

Ayurvedic treatment for Alzheimer’s

Vata imbalances are common in old age. Ayurveda Alzheimer’s treatment mainly aims at restoring vata balance.

Ayurvedic therapy for Alzheimer’s starts with choice of a vata balanced diet. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) powder with milk, ghee or skimmed milk according to the digestive capacity of the person is the first re-arrangement in daily diet. This soothes and empowers vata.

Daily oil massage before bath is another important part of Alzheimer’s treatment in Ayurveda.

The person at his or her old age must get enough nutrients. There are specialized rice preparations beneficial for persons who experience the onset of or advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ayurvedic cleansing processes like panchakarma are not indicated for aged people. Other mild cleansing techniques like fumigation and enema are directed to purify body tissues.

Nervine tonics like brahmi, aswagandha etc are main herbs for Alzheimer’s treatment.

Alzheimer’s Disease Home Remedies, Causes, Symptoms

Friday, February 8th, 2008
Alzheimers
John mathew asked:

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain and results in disorientation, with impaired memory, thinking, and judgement. People with Alzheimers also undergo changes in their behavior. This combination of symptoms is also called dementia.People with Alzheimer’s disease have an atrophy of the cortical tissue within the brain. When examined at autopsy the brain shows abnormal fibers that appear to be tangles of brain tissue filaments (neurofibrillary tangles) and senile plaques (patches of degenerative nerve endings). This damage is believed to cause disruption to transmission of impulses amongst brain cells. It is this damage that is thought to produce the symptoms of the disease.SymptomsThe early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can be difficult to diagnose because many of the symptoms are initially subtle or common to other illnesses. Symptoms also vary among individuals and between the various diseases that cause dementia. As people get older, they start to forget little things, like the names of acquaintances and where they put the car keys. This needn’t be a sign of dementia and in a lot of cases it’s just that we are growing old and our brains are no longer at their peak. It’s important to understand the early signs of Alzheimer’s and to seek a medical diagnosis if several symptoms are noticed. Often, it is a family member or close associate who first notices a change in the behavior or mood of a loved one; these people are instrumental in helping the person to get medical care.CausesScientists do not yet fully understand what causes Alzheimer’s disease. There probably is not one single cause, but several factors that affect each person differently. Age is the most important known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65.Researchers have also considered genetic causes of Alzheimer’s disease and have found that some genetic mutations do seem to increase the chance of developing Alzheimer’s symptoms. Mutations in the genetic codes of beta-amyloid proteins and presenilin 1 and 2 have been considered as causes of early-onset Alzheimer’s. While the mutations often appear with early-onset Alzheimer’s, the majority of patients with Alzheimer’s-related brain damage do not show any evidence of these mutations.Home RemediesSesame oil is a holistic food item that is actually the basic ingredient of most herbal medicine originating from India. Studies have shown that sesame oil can relieve the depression associated with Alzheimer’s disease. To use sesame oil for Alzheimer’s, heat a small amount of oil using a tablespoon over a burner or a candle. Apply three drops of the warmed sesame seed oil in both the patient’s nostril twice a day.Ginkgo – Unfortunately, doctors have underestimated the power of this herb but Ginkgo maximizes the flow of blood to the brain and helps protect neurons from free radicals. Recommended usage is 240 mg a day.

What are the symptoms of alzheimers?

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Garrile N asked:

This is in relation to the question I asked earlier about my mother and her outbursts, arguing, and accusations.

I’m starting to wonder if it’s the beginning of alzheimers disease?

If so I fear my father and I have a LONG road to travel. I know of another relative that went through it and it wasn’t pretty.

If it is alzheimers setting in what are our options at this early stage of it? How do we get her help when she thinks we’re just against her and SHE’S the victim? Getting a diagnosis is impossible.

It was suggested once and only once before that she seek the help of a professional (doctor, phsychiatrist, couselor, etc..) she got so angry and argumentative that she smashed a skillet down on the glass top stove and shattered it.

My father and I are at our wits end with this now.

What can we do without sacrificing our own way of living?
snowbunny,

the relative I said who went through alzheimers was also combative and acusational in the beginning. That’s why I asked. I don’t know the exacts of alzheimers, but I do know that it’s just not memory loss

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease - Is There A Link?

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008
Alzheimers
Jonty Smith asked:

Both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease afflict around 500,000 individuals annually with their eroding and life-sapping effects. While Alzheimer’s robs memories and personality and ultimately leads to lowered motor function, Parkinson’s disease steals the person of rudimentary motor function resulting in a trembling or palsy to dominate the body. Scientists have contemplated for years whether or not there was a link between both diseases, either in terms of genetics or environmental reasons which initiated the onset of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
Parkinson’s disease is an incurable illness of the nervous system involving the neuro-transmitters in the brain starting to become defective, causing a bodily shaking and limbs that gets increasingly poor as time goes by. Symptoms of austerity and difficulty walking at a regular bearing also appear over time. Ultimately this disease will steal the person’s ability to regulate their balance consequenting in more trips and falls, which is a consideration for their well being.
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are dissimilar in that Parkinson’s disease seems to concentrate more on physical handicaps, Alzheimer’s disease appears to afflict the mental abilities prior to the motor skills and physical skills deteriorating. Common everyday absent-mindedness evolves into disorientation and forgetfulness which become a major issue for daily functioning. The whereabouts of houses or recalling the faces of kids or buddies becomes increasingly troublesome with time. Eventually, the personality can change as a result of the disease.
In spring 2003, a scientific study found that there may well be a direct link between Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In the scientific study, it contended that more aged adults who contract the shakes and other quintessential symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may be as much as eightfold more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as well. Additionally, it has been displayed that the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease can be very much alike and possibly develop along the same lines, although the ultimate cause may be different.
It has also been suggested in disease research that Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease could possibly have a connection with how both diseases progress as the years go by. The former study released in the spring 2003 publication of The Archives of Neurology observed the development of symptoms linked with Parkinson’s disease among 824 Catholic church attenders with 75 years of age being the average, and who had no obvious signs of Alzheimer’s disease at the start of the study. Around four and half years later, 79% of the study’s individuals found a more speedy development of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Those who experienced the speedier progression, it was discovered that they were eight times more likely to possess symptoms of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Is there a link between Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease? To date, medical professionals are still discussing that suggestion, but increasingly more research studies seem to imply that there is possibly a connection between these two debilitating illnesses. Hopefully in time research will be able to explain the link, if any, linking Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
