besides alzheimers or amnesia, is there a disorder that causes people to temporarily not recognize loved ones?

If someone is having small strokes (TIA’s) it could affect their memory. Young people can have strokes, though it is unusual.

I would say a head injury may cause this type of condition or even a really high fever….
