sdjerome asked:

John McCain is nearly 72, an age at which many first come down with Alzheimer’s Disease. If McCain is elected and starts coming down with Alzheimer’s, will medication allow him to continue out his term without risking our national security or the nation’s welfare? Will medication prevent the disease from impacting on his ability to run the country?

And Hillary likes seafood, so she may come down with mercury poisoning, and no telling if Obama has complications from sickle-cell syndrome, so let’s just omit all three from consideration and start over…

Alzheimer’s usually shows its first symptoms at around 60 and by the age of 72 can already be quite advanced but not always. The progression of the disease is uneven sometimes going very slowly at other times rapid. Medication slows the progression of the disease. Yes, it would allow him to finish out his term. However, if he should become incapacitated he can be removed and the vice-president would then become president.

You know what, age discrimination is discrimination too. That’s what you are doing. You are saying because he’s in his early seventies, he is going to get Alzheimer’s. First of all, there are people in their forties who have it, and people in their nineties who don’t, so get some education about Alzheimer’s. And stop discriminating on basis of age.
